Late blight of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) caused by the oomycete Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) de Bary, is one of the most important bottlenecks of potato production worldwide. Cultivars with high levels of durable, race unspecific, quantitative resistance are part of a solution to this problem. However, breeding for quantitative resistance is hampered by the correlation between resistance and late plant maturity, which is an undesirable agricultural attribute. The objectives of our research are (i) the identification of genes that condition quantitative resistance to P. infestans not compromised by late plant maturity and (ii) the discovery of diagnostic single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers to be used as molecular tools to increase efficiency and precision of resistance breeding. Twenty two novel candidate genes were selected based on comparative transcript profiling by SuperSAGE (serial analysis of gene expression) in groups of plants with contrasting levels of maturity corrected resistance (MCR). Reproducibility of differential expression was tested by quantitative real time PCR and allele specific pyrosequencing in four new sets of genotype pools with contrasting late blight resistance levels, at three infection time points and in three independent infection experiments. Reproducibility of expression patterns ranged from 28 to 97%. Association mapping in a panel of 184 tetraploid cultivars identified SNPs in five candidate genes that were associated with MCR. These SNPs can be used in marker-assisted resistance breeding. Linkage mapping in two half-sib families (n = 111) identified SNPs in three candidate genes that were linked with MCR. The differentially expressed genes that showed association and/or linkage with MCR putatively function in phytosterol synthesis, fatty acid synthesis, asparagine synthesis, chlorophyll synthesis, cell wall modification, and in the response to pathogen elicitors

Galaxy Kinematics With Virus-P: The Dark Matter Halo Of M87

We present two-dimensional stellar kinematics of M87 out to R = 238 '' taken with the integral field spectrograph VIRUS-P. We run a large set of axisymmetric, orbit-based dynamical models and find clear evidence for a massive dark matter halo. While a logarithmic parameterization for the dark matter halo is preferred, we do not constrain the dark matter scale radius for a Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) profile and therefore cannot rule it out. Our best-fit logarithmic models return an enclosed dark matter fraction of 17.2(-5.0)(+5.0)% within one effective radius (R-e congruent to 100 ''), rising to 49.4(-8.8)(+7.2)% within 2 R-e. Existing SAURON data (R <= 13 ''), and globular cluster (GC) kinematic data covering 145 '' <= R <= 554 '' complete the kinematic coverage to R = 47 kpc (similar to 5R(e)). At this radial distance, the logarithmic dark halo comprises 85.3(-2.4)(+2.5)% of the total enclosed mass of 5.7(-0.9)(+1.3) x 10(12) M-circle dot making M87 one of the most massive galaxies in the local universe. Our best-fit logarithmic dynamical models return a stellar mass-to-light ratio (M/L) of 9.1(-0.2)(+0.2) (V band), a dark halo circular velocity of 800(-25)(+75) km s(-1), and a dark halo scale radius of 36(-3)(+7) kpc. The stellar M/L, assuming an NFW dark halo, is well constrained to 8.20(-0.10)(+0.05) (V band). The stars in M87 are found to be radially anisotropic out to R congruent to 0.5 R-e, then isotropic or slightly tangentially anisotropic to our last stellar data point at R = 2.4 R-e where the anisotropy of the stars and GCs are in excellent agreement. The GCs then become radially anisotropic in the last two modeling bins at R = 3.4 R-e and R = 4.8 R-e. As one of the most massive galaxies in the local universe, constraints on both the mass distribution of M87 and anisotropy of its kinematic components strongly inform our theories of early-type galaxy formation and evolution in dense environments.Astronom

Objective: The objective of this EBM review is to determine whether or not “Is oral aloe vera effective in reducing symptoms in adults with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) symptoms?” Study Design: Systematic review of three English, randomized, controlled, double-blind studies, including one cross-over study, were selected based on their relevance to the clinical question. The studies were published in 2006, 2011, and 2015. Data Sources: Three RCTs analyzing the effects on IBS symptoms of drinking aloe vera daily compared to a placebo drink were found using PubMed. Outcomes Measured: Various patient-reported IBS symptom questionnaires were utilized to compare the effectiveness of drinking oral aloe vera versus the placebo on reducing symptoms in adults with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). K. Davis used the Global Summated Symptom Score.2 Storsrud S. used the IBS Symptom Severity Scoring System (IBS-SSS).4 H.A. Hutchings used the Irritable Bowel Syndrome Quality of Life Questionnaire (IBSQOL).3 Results: In the Davis et al study, there was no significant improvement of IBS symptoms between the aloe vera and placebo group (p= 0.12). The NNT was -11.2 In the Storsrud et al pilot study, there was no significant improvement in IBS symptoms in using the Aloe barbadensis Mill. extract in comparison to the placebo (p=0.09). The NNT was 5.4 In the Hutchings et al study, there was no significant improvement of IBS symptoms between the aloe vera and placebo group (p\u3e0.05). The mean change from baseline was 69-74 points on the ISBQOL score for period 1.3 Conclusions: Although two of the studies showed trends towards improvement, all three studies were not considered statistically significant in showing improvement in symptoms in IBS symptoms. Therefore, oral aloe vera is not considered effective in reducing symptoms in adults with irritable bowel syndrome. Additionally, after my further research via WebMD on the safety of drinking aloe vera, I found varying results for whom it was considered safe. I would suggest that future studies first assess its safety before evaluating it effectiveness in reducing IBS symptoms

dissertationPortable electronic devices will be limited to available energy of existing battery chemistries for the foreseeable future. However, system-on-chips (SoCs) used in these devices are under a demand to offer more functionality and increased battery life. A difficult problem in SoC design is providing energy-efficient communication between its components while maintaining the required performance. This dissertation introduces a novel energy-efficient network-on-chip (NoC) communication architecture. A NoC is used within complex SoCs due it its superior performance, energy usage, modularity, and scalability over traditional bus and point-to-point methods of connecting SoC components. This is the first academic research that combines asynchronous NoC circuits, a focus on energy-efficient design, and a software framework to customize a NoC for a particular SoC. Its key contribution is demonstrating that a simple, asynchronous NoC concept is a good match for low-power devices, and is a fruitful area for additional investigation. The proposed NoC is energy-efficient in several ways: simple switch and arbitration logic, low port radix, latch-based router buffering, a topology with the minimum number of 3-port routers, and the asynchronous advantages of zero dynamic power consumption while idle and the lack of a clock tree. The tool framework developed for this work uses novel methods to optimize the topology and router oorplan based on simulated annealing and force-directed movement. It studies link pipelining techniques that yield improved throughput in an energy-efficient manner. A simulator is automatically generated for each customized NoC, and its traffic generators use a self-similar message distribution, as opposed to Poisson, to better match application behavior. Compared to a conventional synchronous NoC, this design is superior by achieving comparable message latency with half the energy

Fabry-Perot Measurements of the Dynamics of Globular Cluster Cores: M15 (NGC~7078)

We report the first use of the Rutgers Imaging Fabry-Perot Spectrophotometer to study the dynamics of the cores of globular clusters. We have obtained velocities for cluster stars by tuning the Fabry-Perot to take a series of narrow-band images at different wavelengths across one of the Na D (5890 AA) absorption lines. Measuring the flux in every frame yields a short portion of the spectrum for each star simultaneously. This proves to be a very efficient method for obtaining accurate stellar velocities; in crowded regions we are able to measure hundreds of velocities in 3-4 hours of observing time. We have measured velocities with uncertainties of less than 5 km/s for 216 stars within 1.5' of the center of the globular cluster M15 (NGC 7078). The paper is a uuencoded compressed postscript file
